Putting and Getting Files from Within Dreamweaver

Once you have defined your site you will either have to upload your site to a remote server, or if you are using a "new" computer then you will want to pull your site down from the remote server to your local drive. Dreamweaver has it's own FTP, so there is no need to use any second party software to upload and download your Web site files.

The first thing you need to do is make sure your "Files" panel is open. To open it go to Windows -> Files

Once the Files panel is open you will see several different icons as shown below.

The drop-down on the left where you see TEWM is where you select a defined site. The drop-down next to it allows you to view your site Remotely or Locally. The 2 electrical plugs allow you to connect to your server...in the case above we are connected as indicated by the green dot under the plugs. The purple circular arrow rotating CW is to refresh the view, the green arrow (pointing down) Gets files/folders, and the blue arrow (pointing up) Puts files/folders. The green/blue arrow (two circular arrows) is for Synching the local with the remote, and the panel icon on the far right allows you to view both remote and local files simultaneously.

The first thing you need to do is go to the drop-down on the far left and select your site. I will select the TEWM site.

If we are pulling down a site to our local drive, then we need to select the Remote View. If you want to put a site or files to your sever, then select Local View.

If you are pulling down your entire site then select the /public_html/ folder as above and then click the green Get arrow. If you are putting your files to a new server, then you need to select the top most folder...since the site has been defined then the folder will begin with the word Site.

You can Put or Get an individual file or multiple files. To select multiple files In Windows hold the Ctrl key down while selecting, and on a Mac use the Cmd key. Once you have selected your files then Put or Get the files by selecting the appropriate "arrow." When you Put or Get files a dialog box (image below) will appear asking you if you want to "Put/Get dependent files?" If you have just created a page and have inserted several images then rather than going and finding the images to Put them, you can just select "Yes" and all dependent files/images will be uploaded/downloaded along with the page. A Log will appear while the files are uploading/downloading. If the log does not appear then you can force it to show by clicking on the Log tab on the bottom right of the Files panel.

Finally, always make sure you test your page after putting it to make sure that all files have been Put.
