Turning Vista Features Off
Some programs and features that are included with Windows, such as Internet Information Services, must be turned on before you can use them. On the other hand, other features are turned on by default. But don't worry, you can turn them off if you don’t use them.
In earlier versions of Windows, to turn a feature off, you had to uninstall it completely from your computer. In Windows Vista though, the features remain stored on your hard disk, so you can turn them on and off as you wish. And just so you know, turning off a feature does not uninstall the feature and it does not reduce the amount of hard disk space used by Windows features.
To turn a feature off, go to Start, Control Panel and click on Programs. Next, under the Programs and Features section, click Turn Windows Features On or Off (see picture above). Or, you can press the Windows button, type in OptionalFeatures and press Enter.
To turn a Windows feature on, select the checkbox next to the option. To turn a Windows feature off, clear the checkbox.
That's all there is to it!
Tip #2 - Stop That Application
Back in the old days, there were a lot of places an application could hook itself to in order to run at the startup. You had to check the registry in more than one place, as well as, your Start menu. Well, with Windows Vista, there's a built in panel that handles all of that for you!
To quickly get to this panel, go to Start, Control Panel and then type "startup" into the search box. The link for "Stop a program from running at startup" shows up immediately. You could have also opened Windows Defender and messed around with the menus in there until you find the right spot, but this seems a lot quicker to me.
Now you can see the Windows Defender screen that lets you manage the startup programs.
You can choose to Remove or just Disable any startup item using this panel, along with a lot of other useful information so that you can see what each item is.
